Left / right speaker test

Four checks that between them prove a stereo pair is working: each channel plays, they are on the correct sides, they are level-matched, and they are in phase. Headphones give the clearest result — and close your eyes.

Start at a low level and raise it gradually — sustained test tones are more fatiguing than music at the same volume.

1. Which side is which

Press each and confirm the sound comes from the side you expect. Different pitches so you can tell them apart with your eyes shut.


2. Balance sweep

The tone travels from hard left to hard right over 8 seconds. It should move smoothly and pass through the centre of your head at the halfway point.


3. Phase check

Same tone in both ears, once normally and once with one channel's polarity flipped. In phase should sound solid and centred; out of phase should sound hollow. If they are the wrong way round, a speaker is wired backwards.


4. Level match

The same 440 Hz tone in each ear in turn. Switch between them and listen for one being quieter — that is the check people most often skip.

Why phase matters more than it sounds like it should

A speaker moves air by pushing and pulling. If one speaker's leads are reversed it pulls while the other pushes, so at the frequencies where their outputs overlap the two waves partially cancel.

The result is not silence — it is a stereo image that will not settle in the middle, and noticeably thinner bass, because long wavelengths are the ones that cancel most effectively. People live with this for years and conclude their speakers are "not very bassy". It is a thirty-second fix at the terminals.

Test conditions

  • Headphones beat speakers for this. A room reflects, so a dead channel can still seem faintly present.
  • Close your eyes. Vision overrides hearing for direction — if you can see the speaker, you will tend to hear it.
  • Sit centred if you are using speakers. Being closer to one is the same as a balance error.
  • Check for adapters. Cheap USB-C and Lightning dongles are a common cause of a dead or quiet channel.

If the channels are fine but it is still quiet

Then this is not a stereo problem. How do I test left and right speakers?

Play a tone in one channel at a time and confirm it comes from the side you expect. Then play a continuous pan from left to right — the image should travel smoothly and reach the middle at the halfway point. If it does not, either the channels are swapped or the balance is off-centre.

How do I know if my left and right are swapped?

Press "Left only" and note which side you actually hear. Swapped channels are surprisingly common with speaker wiring, cheap adapters, and headphones worn the wrong way round — the L and R markings on in-ears are often tiny.

What is a stereo test?

A check that both channels work, that they carry the correct sides, that they are balanced in level, and that they are in phase with each other. Those four things together are what makes a stereo image work; any one of them being wrong collapses it.

What does out of phase sound like?

Hollow and diffuse. The bass thins out and the sound seems to come from around your head rather than from a point in front of you. If the in-phase test sounds hollow and the out-of-phase test sounds solid, one of your speaker cables is wired backwards.

Why does the sound seem to come from one side?

Either a balance setting is off-centre, one driver is weaker, or you have a hearing asymmetry. Run the level-match test: the same tone in each ear should sound equally loud. If one side is consistently quieter across every frequency, it is usually the equipment; if only at some frequencies, it is worth an audiologist.

How do I fix swapped channels?

On wired speakers, swap the cables at the amplifier. On headphones, check the L and R markings and turn them around. In software, look for a balance or channel-swap setting — macOS and Windows both have a balance slider in their sound output settings, and it can end up off-centre by accident.

Does this work with headphones?

Yes, and headphones give the clearest result because the two channels are physically separated at your ears. Speakers in a room reflect off walls, so a channel that is entirely dead can still seem faintly audible from the other side.

Should I test with my eyes closed?

It genuinely helps. Vision dominates spatial perception, so if you can see the speaker you expect to hear, you are more likely to believe you heard it. Closing your eyes removes that.
