Left / right speaker test
Four checks that between them prove a stereo pair is working: each channel plays, they are on the correct sides, they are level-matched, and they are in phase. Headphones give the clearest result — and close your eyes.
Start at a low level and raise it gradually — sustained test tones are more fatiguing than music at the same volume.
1. Which side is which
Press each and confirm the sound comes from the side you expect. Different pitches so you can tell them apart with your eyes shut.
2. Balance sweep
The tone travels from hard left to hard right over 8 seconds. It should move smoothly and pass through the centre of your head at the halfway point.
3. Phase check
Same tone in both ears, once normally and once with one channel's polarity flipped. In phase should sound solid and centred; out of phase should sound hollow. If they are the wrong way round, a speaker is wired backwards.
4. Level match
The same 440 Hz tone in each ear in turn. Switch between them and listen for one being quieter — that is the check people most often skip.
Reading the results

Why phase matters more than it sounds like it should
A speaker moves air by pushing and pulling. If one speaker's leads are reversed it pulls while the other pushes, so at the frequencies where their outputs overlap the two waves partially cancel.
The result is not silence — it is a stereo image that will not settle in the middle, and noticeably thinner bass, because long wavelengths are the ones that cancel most effectively. People live with this for years and conclude their speakers are "not very bassy". It is a thirty-second fix at the terminals.
Test conditions
- Headphones beat speakers for this. A room reflects, so a dead channel can still seem faintly present.
- Close your eyes. Vision overrides hearing for direction — if you can see the speaker, you will tend to hear it.
- Sit centred if you are using speakers. Being closer to one is the same as a balance error.
- Check for adapters. Cheap USB-C and Lightning dongles are a common cause of a dead or quiet channel.
If the channels are fine but it is still quiet
