A browser extension can genuinely boost any tab, which is more than any iPhone app can do. It also asks for permissions that make it worth thinking about — several of the most popular ones were removed from the Chrome Web Store in 2026 for running remote code.

Why an extension can do what a phone app cannot

On a desktop browser, an extension can capture a tab's audio stream and apply gain before it reaches your speakers. Because the browser owns every tab, an extension operating inside it can affect any site playing sound.

On iOS nothing equivalent exists. Each app's audio is isolated, so an iPhone app can only process its own playback. That is the whole reason these are separate categories rather than the same product on two platforms — and why an extension review saying "it made YouTube louder" and an iPhone review saying "it did nothing to my music app" are both accurate. We go through it properly in how it works.

The safety problem, stated plainly

To boost a tab, an extension typically requests permission to read and change your data on all websites you visit. That is a broad grant — enough to read what you type, including into forms — and it makes a popular audio extension a valuable thing to acquire.

In 2026, security researchers identified four volume booster extensions on the Chrome Web Store — with roughly 700,000 users between them — behaving as "sleeper agents": able to download and execute code from a remote server, with encrypted communications and links to known malware infrastructure. Google removed them.

The pattern that produces this is usually not a malicious developer at launch. It is a genuine, well-reviewed extension that gets sold, and the new owner ships an update to an install base that trusts it.

What to check before installing one

  • Permissions. A tab-audio booster needs the active tab. It does not need all sites, your history, or your cookies. If the ask is broader than the job, that is the signal.
  • Recent ownership change. Look at the reviews around the most recent update. A wave of complaints after a long period of praise is the tell.
  • What it does when idle. An audio extension has no reason to be active on pages that are not playing sound.
  • Whether you still need it. Extensions accumulate. One you installed for a single video two years ago still holds its permissions.

What they cannot do

  • DRM-protected playback. The protection that stops you recording a stream also stops an extension processing its audio.
  • Anything outside the browser. System sounds, other applications, your phone.
  • Exceed your speakers. A "1000% boost" past the hardware limit produces clipping, not volume — and extensions advertising numbers that large usually have no limiter at all, which is why they sound harsh.

Do we make one?

Not currently. Volume Booster is an iPhone app: it plays your own audio files with gain, a bass dial and a 6-band equalizer applied. That is a different job from boosting a browser tab and we would rather say so than let you install the wrong thing.

If we do build one, it will be free, ad-free, and will ask for the narrowest permissions the work requires rather than access to every site you visit. This category has a trust problem, and adding another permission-hungry extension to it would not be a contribution.

If you are on a phone rather than a desktop

Extensions are not the answer there. Depending on what is quiet:

Why does the extension not work on some sites?

Sites using DRM-protected playback often cannot be captured, and some pages block extension access entirely. Video streaming services are the common case — the same protection that stops you recording the stream also stops an extension processing its audio.
